Meeting on November 18, 2018
This time,
our meeting was in the evening and there was a certain reason for this as you will
see in the photos that will follow.
We first
started with a presentation of Walker Evans' life and work. We will remember
him for the photographs depicting the life of poor farmers right after the
Great Depression of 1929-1933 and because he was the first to make shop signs have a
photographic significance.
Then,
taking advantage of the darkness, we took some shots with slow shutter speed.
Learning the technique of photography can also be a joyful game ...
Our first attempt was to draw a heart with a
flashlight.![]() |
Our first attempt
to shape a heart.

However, we
found that because of the long exposure (10 seconds) the library was recorded
in the background. It was necessary to underexposure the photo in order for the
library not to be visible. So, we had two options: either we could change the shutter’s
speed or we could change the len’s aperture. The first option was discarded
because if we reduced the time of exposure, we wouldn't be able to shape the
heart with the flashlight, so we decided to stop down the aperture. After some
tries we ended up realizing that that we need to stop down the aperture 4
stops, so the following shot was taken:

Here it
is!

After that,
we all turned on our smartphones’ flashlights.
At first we simply waved our flashlights to make some abstract (or not) designs.
Wow! Have a look at this detail at the right side of the photo. Who did that?
Truly incredible, especially if you keep in mind that it was created only by moving a flashlight!
Welldone Χ.Κ!!!
Then we decided to write the word “ΚΟΝΤΑΡΙΩΤΙΣΣΑ” (KONTARIOTISSA)! After we took the shot, we all ran to see if we had really managed to do it ...
Yes! We did
it!
Next, we
decided to photoshoot one of the team's members in order to learn that the same
subject can be captured differently from each photographer.
We
continued the games for a little more:
Even though it
was really cold outside, we decided to take some outdoor shots. The reason for
this is obvious as you can see here :
If you
wonder how we took these photos, you can easily find out on the internet just
by searching '' steel wool photography ''.
In the end of
the evening we visited a local tavern and we had the chance to get to know each
other better and have a great time as a team!
